Bricking by OTA update after re-flashing stock ROM

I've read many posts that if we, re - flash the stock ROM, and then perform an OTA update, then it might brick the device, due to the bootloader incompatibility.

So, here I'm not sure, what type of bricking(soft brick or hard brick).

And, can someone explain in detail, what's actually happens, in this case?

As in, if I install a custom ROM, and then reflash the stock ROM, and perform an OTA update, would it brick the device?
