Switching between android n and mm?

I want to try out android n but I want to be able to come back to mm easily. I've got xposed and such installed plus I'm worried about the encryption that is prompted at boot. I have twrp recovery installed as well, that's how I make my back ups.

Would it be possible to use twrp to make a full system (including all other partitions) image, then use the official way to get to android n, and then in case I want to go back, just flash the twrp created mm image via fastboot? Or does this brick the phone due to twrp not being installed or some "hidden" firmware thing like on other phones?
