Update Lenovo S820 with the new International Firmware Version ROW_S223 

1. First thing to do is install USB Vcom driver on your computer, without this driver installed on your computer flash tool will not recognize your device and progress bar will stay at 0%, for installing USB Vcom driver please refer to this below :


• turn off your device and remove the battery, If you device using non removable make sure that your device is completely turn off wait like 20 seconds after power off the device
• open device manager on your computer
• connect your device using USB cable
• there will be MTK65xx Preloader Devices show on your device manager, PORT section for 5 second or less and then disappear
• disconnect and connect your device again, right click on MTK65xx Preloader Devices before it disappear, select Update Driver Software 
• point it USB VCOM extracted folder, and install the driver from there.
• disconnect and connect your device again, there will be Mediatek PreLoader USB VCOM Port on your device manager PORT section.
2. After successful install USB Vcom driver now we can start the step to update Lenovo S920, for step by step for update please refer to below :
   
   
   • Extract ROM downloaded and the flash tool on then same folder, for easy organize it and flashing it. Go to flash tool extracted folder and run flash_tool.exe. If you are using windows 7 or later please run it using administrator privilege.
   • On the flash tool, please go to Options ↦ Option ↦ Download please make sure DA DL All with Checksum already checked, click X (Close) to back to Flash Tool, this option is very important so please don't forget it.
     
   
   
   • Once back to flash tool, now please click on the Scatter-Loading button and point it to ROM extracted folder and the select MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt this will automatically loaded all required images file to update your device, Please wait until flash tool finish processing the image files and become stand by.
     
   
   
   • Change Download option from Download Only to Firmware Upgrade mode, now you can press Download button or hit CTRL+D. Flash tool will initialize the files that add to the flash tool and when finish flash tool will ready to make connection with your device.
     
   
   
   • When flash tool already finish and stand by, now please turn off your device and remove the battery. Connect your device to computer using USB cable, flash tool will immediately recognize your device and begin to start flashing process, this process will take 5-6 minutes to finish and when you see GREEN CIRCLE in the middle of flash tool that mean flashing process already finish
     


3. Done, you have successful update your Lenovo S920 with firmware version ROW_S223, please confirm it with go to System Setting ↦ About Phone and look at the Build Number it must be same with the downloaded ROM.

1. Download the ROM files and copied to your external SD card root directory, don't inside the folder.
2. Then shutdown your device. follow below step to go to recovery mode :

Lenovo S820, Change Modem Firmware to Get Better Signal Reception

1. This guide will use TWRP custom recovery, but CWM also have the same menu as TWRP so you still can follow this guide using CWM custom recovery.
2. Download the modem file you are going to flash on your device. Move or copy the modem files to your SD card root, don't place it inside the folder.
3. Turn off your device, press and hold Power button + Volume Up + Volume Down button and release until you can see TWRP main menu. This combination button will bring your device to boot on recovery mode.
4. On the TWRP select Install ↦ Select Zip to Install navigate to your SD card where do you save the modem file and select it.
   


5. When you already select it, just Swipe to Install. Installation progress will be show on the next windows, this installation only take 10-15 seconds. Select Reboot after finish install modem file.
6. Boot normally and confirm with go to System Setting ↦ About Phone ↦ look on the Baseband Version make sure it same with the downloaded modem file.
7. Done.

Lenovo S820, Restore Lenovo Standard Recovery File - A lot reader on my blog asking me, after installing custom recovery how do i can back to Lenovo Recovery ? Usually i ask them to make ROM backup first before performing any ROM modification, but sometime they feel difficult how to backup the current running ROM so because of this i will show how to restore Lenovo standard recovery to Lenovo S820 running S221 ROW version firmware.

1. Download all files required on your computer, before continued to next step please make sure that USB VCOM driver is completely installed on your device so flash tool can recognize your device once it connected.
2. Extract ROW_S221_recovery and Flash Tool on one folder for easy organize it, go to flash tool extracted folder and run flasht_tool.exe, remember to run it with administrator privilege if you are using windows 7 or later.
3. On the flash tool check DA DL All with Checksum option, this is important don't forget or you will get error after flashing. Now click on Scatter-Loading button and point it to ROW_S221_recovery extracted folder and select MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt, this will automatically load recovery image to flash tool.
   


4. Now you can press Download button or hit F9, warning information will show that tell you not all images successful loaded, just click Yes button. Flash tool will become stand by and ready to make connection with your device.
   


5. Now turn off your device and remove the battery, when ready connect your device to your computer using USB cable. Flash Tool will recognize your device and begin to start flashing process, this flashing just take 5-10 second to finish. When you see GREEN CIRCLE on the middle of flash tool that mean flashing is finish.
   


6. Done, now you can disconnect your device. Please confirm that Lenovo Standard Recovery already installed on your device. go to recovery press and hold Power button + Volume Up + Volume Down button until you can see language option.

1. Download all required files to your computer, Move or copy VIBEUI_V2.0_1443_ST_S820, Vibe UI Cleaner, Google Applications Minimal 4.4.2 and 4.4Root to your external SD Card, don't extract it and don't put inside the folder.
2. Turn of your device, press and hold Power button + Volume Up button until you can see language option. Choose English ↦ Update
3. Installation will start just wait until process update finish, it will take about 5-6 minutes to finish. Select Reboot, first boot will be take about 5-6 minutes to finish so please be patient, finish this step you already update your Lenovo S820 to Vibe UI 2.0, if you wanna rooting and installing google applications just continued to the next step.
4. Make sure USB VCOM driver already install completely before continued to the next step, extract CWMrecovery and Flash Tool on the same folder for easy organize it. 
5. Go to flash tool extracted folder and run Flash_Tool.exe if you are using windows 7 or later please run it using administrator privilege for avoid any permission error. on the flash tool check DA DL ALL with Checksum option, and the press Scatter-Loading button, point it to S820-CWMrecovery-0625/MT6589_Android_scatter.txt this will automatically load all recovery.img (rename S820-CWMrecovery-0625.img to recovery.img) on the flash tool.
   


6. Now press Download button or hit F9, When there is warning that tell not all images correctly loaded just press OK button.
   


7. Turn off your device and remove the battery, connect your device to your computer. flash tool will recognize your device and start flashing process. This process will only take 10-15 seconds to finish. When you see GREEN CIRCLE in the middle of flash tool than you can disconnect your device.
   


8. Disconnect your device but don't turn it on first, for now you already successful update your Lenovo S820 to Vibe UI 2.0 with CN Custom Recovery. Go to recovery mode by hold and press Power button + Volume Up button, install 4.4Root, BusyBox v1.22, Vibe UI Cleaner, and the last is install Google Applications Minimal 4.4.2 using recovery mode, use below picture for reference. 9. Done, Now you already successful upgrade Lenovo S820 with Vibe UI 2.0 include Google Applications and ROOT.

1. Download all required files above, place it on one folder to easy organized it. The most important is you must make sure that the USB VCOM driver is installed completely before continued to the next step.
2. Extract the ROM and Flash Tool on the same folder, extract again target_bin from downloaded ROM.
3. Go to flash tool extracted folder and run flash_tool.exe, if you are running windows 7 or later please run flash tool with administrator privilege to avoid any permission error.
4. On the flash tool click on Scatter-Loading button and point it to target_bin/MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt, this action will load all ROM images to the flash tool. 
5. Please check DA DL All with Checksum option.
   


6. When everything is set up, just click Download button or hit F9, flash tool will initialize the ROM images  and become ready to get connect with your device. When you got error (8038) when connect your device just press Firmware ↦ Upgrade instead of Download
7. Turn off your device and remove the battery, wait for 5-10 second after remove the battery and when you ready just connect your device. For device produce in 2014 you must download this preloader 2014 , extract it to ROM folder and remove the checksum.ini file

When it finish disconnect and connect again there will be Mediatek PreLoader USB VCOM Port on your device manager.

Re-Flashing Lenovo S820 with Official ROW Version S820_ROW_S124

1. Download all required files, extract S820_ROW_S124_140404 and extract SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1316 inside it. Please make sure that USB VCOM driver already completely installed before continue to the next step.
2. Go to extracted folder, there will be target_bin folder and SP_Flash_Tool folder, you just need these 2 folder only. Now go to SP_Flash_Tool folder and run Flash_Tool.exe, if you running windows 7 please run it as administrator privilege.
3. On the flash tool. Tick DA DL All with Checksum option, this is an important option so don't forget to tick it. if DA DL All with Checksum option is disable, then you need to click on Scatter-Loading button and point it to target_bin/MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt this will automatic load all image files required for flashing to flash tool. 
   


4. Leave Preload empty. After finish configure Flash Tool now press Downoad button or hit F9, flash tool will pop up warning that not all images loaded just confirm with press Yes button. Flash tool will begin to initialize and become ready to receive connection from your device.
5. Now turn off your device and remove the battery. Then connect to your computer using USB cable, flash tool will recognize your device and begin to start flashing process. This process will take 5-6 minutes and you can see the progress on the bottom flash tool.
6. If you can see Green Circle in the middle of flash tool than it mean you successful flashing your device and now you can disconnect your device from computer.
   


7. Done, now try booting to your device and confirm the build number is same with the downloaded ROM, go to System Setting ↦ About Phone or you can dial #### 5993 #

Upgrade Lenovo S820 with Android KitKat Row Version

1. Requirements :
   • This can be do only if your current firmware is S820_ROW_S124_140404, please confirm it with go to System Setting ↦ About Phone ↦ Build Number. 
     
   • Confirm that your Lenovo device still using stock Lenovo recovery.
   • This update will be delete all your data store on your device, backup first for safety.
   • Lenovo S820 8GB can also follow this guide, but still do with your own risk.
   • Jump to Step 3,


2. If above conditions cannot be filled, than you cannot update your Lenovo S820 to Android KitKat.
3. If your Lenovo S820 not used ROW_S124 then you still can follow below step :
   • S820_ROW_S124_140404 (4GB) ↦ This contains all required files to flashing your device to S124 version. This files can be install using SP Flash Tool
   • S820_ROW_8G_S124_140404 (8GB) ↦ This contains all required files to flashing your device to S124 version for Lenovo S820 8GB. This files can be install using SP Flash Tool


4. After finish complete the requirements now it time to update, rename S820_ROW_S220_140722 to update.zip, now move or copy update.zip to your SD Card. Please copy on SD Card root don't copy inside a folder.

6. Press and hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down button, release it when you can see Lenovo recovery main menu.

• SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1328.0.183 ↦ We need to use SP Flash tool method to install custom recovery (TWRP v2.7.1.1), because we still not gain any root access. Once we gain it we can use a more simple way to change our recovery.
• TWRP v2.7.1.1 ↦ This is a recovery file for Lenovo S820 running Android Kit Kat, this guide not suit if your Lenovo S820 running Android Jelly Bean.
• 4.4 Root ↦ Root file, it contains KingUser application. King User is like SuperSu or SuperUser applications, give permission to other applications to gain root access.
• USB VCOM Driver ↦ Install this driver first on your computer, Turn off your device and remove the battery, using USB cable connect your device while look at My Computer ↦ Manage ↦ Device Manager there will be MTK65xx Preloader Devices show up for 5 second than disappeared, before disappeared right click on it and select Update Driver Software point it to USB VCOM Driver extracted folder. Root, Custom Recovery TWRP v2.7.1.1 for Lenovo S820 Android Kit Kat ROW Version

1. Download all required files provide above, Place all download files on one same folder for easy organize it. Connect your device and copy or move 4.4 Root.zip to your SD Card. Extract everything else 
2. Open SP Flash Tool extracted folder and run Flash_Tool.exe, if you using windows 7 please run using administrator privilege for avoid permission problem. Please check DA DL All with Checksum option, this important and cannot be forgotten. Now click on Scatter-Loading buttonand point it to TWRP v2.7.1.1 extracted folder and select MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt file, This will load recovery image file to it place automatically.
   


3. When finish configure it all, now you can press Download button or hit F9, there will be warning "Not ALL images are correctly loaded, which may cause boot up issued !" just click Yes button and continued the process.
   
   


4. Now turn off your device and remove battery, wait for 3-5 second then connect your device to your computer using USB cable.
5. If USB VCOM driver install successful then SP Flash Tool will immediately recognize your device and begin to start flashing process, this will take not more than 5 minutes to flash the recovery file. Flashing process will mark with RED and YELLOW bar bellow the SP Flash Tool, and if it already finish it will show GREEN CIRCLE int he middle of SP Flash Tool.
   
   


6. If you can reach this step then you already success install TWRP v2.7.1.1 on your device, now try to turn on your device but with combination button. Press and hold Power Button + Volume Up + Volume Down Button then release it when you can see TWRP main menu, now you already on recovery mode.
   


7. On TWRP main menu, select Install, now point it to your SD Card and select 4.4 Root.zip files. Swipe to install the root file to your device. Wait for second until installation finish, back to TWRP main menu and select Reboot.
8. Try to boot to your home screen and search for KingUser application, confirm it that you already successful root your Lenovo S820 running Android 4.4.2 with install RootChecker from Google play store.

• I don't ever try this method for Vibe UI v1.5 Android Kit Kat, This only ever been tested on Android 4.2 or lower but if you has guts you can try this on Vibe UI v1.5
• SD Card set as default Memory, go to Settings ↦ Storage ↦ Default Disk
• Backup your SD Card data to your computer, in case any problem occur. 
• If failed on this tutorial your device will be brick and can only be fix with re-flashing your ROM.

How to Re-Partition Internal Memory on Lenovo S820 4 GB

1. Make sure your SD Cad has at least 2-4 GB free space, this is for Nandroid Backup space. Install Mateos MTK6589 Rom Edit - 4 GB on your device, if any security warning just ignore and continued to install.
2. Now reboot your device to Recovery Mode, remember must use CWM or TWRP because lenovo stock recovery don't have backup / restore function. On recovery mode, select Backup ↦ Swipe to Backup
3. After finish backup process, reboot your device normally. Run Mateos MTK6589 Rom Edit - 4 GB and press Allow when it asking for root permission.
   


4. On the application there is list an available partition size than can be handle by the applications, For Lenovo S820 4 GB the choose is only 2.00GiB /data partition or 2.5GiB /data partition in this guide i am choose the middle range 2.00 GiB /data partition but you can also pick the other one. I don't recommended to pick larger than 2.5GiB /data partition. Select the partition that you wanna to apply to your device, confirm all warning with pressing Yes
   


5. After finish, reboot to recovery mode again, select Wipe Data / Factory Reset. 
6. Back to recovery mode main menu select Restore ↦ Advanced Restore ↦ Restore Data only, point to backup file from step 2
7. Reboot, Done. After finish when you see any notification that told SD Card damage, just click and Format your SD Card (Internal SD Card).
8. If you stuck on Lenovo Logo, Remove the battery and do SD Card Wipe. If any warning to format SD Card (External SD Card) please format it. Because this problem i as you to backup your SD Card data to your computer first.

Preparations :

• Backup your current ROM, Use MTK Droid Tools for full backup your ROM. How to Make Full Backup For Mediatek Device
• Backup your IMEI using MobilUncle MTK Tool.
• Download all required files and place it in one folder for easy organize it.
• Install Preloader VCOM driver, To install this driver please turn off your device and remove battery then connect to computer using USB cable. When your computer ask for driver please point it to MT65XX Preloader Vcom Driver extracted folder, after finish please look at My Computer ↦ Manage ↦ Device Manager ↦ COM (Port & LPT)
  
  
  After you can see your device please disconnect it from your computer, you can turn on your device for moving VIBEUI_v1.5_1427_ST_S820, Vibe UI Cleaner, KingUser v3.3.6 and Gapps Minimal for 4.4.2. After finish moving these files turn off your device again and remove battery, SIM card, and SD Card.

Lenovo S820 Install Vibe UI v1.5 with Gapps and Root :

1. Installation Official Chinese ROM
   
   • Open SP Flash Tool v3.13 folder inside S820_S137_130711 extracted folder, run Flash Tool. Click on Scatter-Loading button point to target_bin/MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc, it will load all necessary ROM files and don't forget to check DA DL All with Check Sum. Now click Firmware ↦ Upgrade or hit F8
     
   
   
   • After finish initialization SP Flash Tool v3.13 will stand by, now connect your device. When MT65XX Preloader Vcom Driver install successful then SP Flash Tool v3.13 will begin starting flashing process, it will take about 9 minutes to flashing the ROM. When it finish it will mark with GREEN CIRCLE in the middle of SP Flash Tool v3.13.
     
   
   
   • Disconnect your device from computer but don't turn it on yet, close all SP Flash Tool v3.13 


2. Installation TWRP v2.6.30 CN
   • Open SP Flash Tool v3.13 and run Flash Tool. Click Scatter-Loading button point to TWRP_v2.6.30_CN/target_bin/MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc, it will load all necessary ROM file and don't forget to check DA DL All with Check Sum. Now click Download button or hit F9. confirm all warning with click Yes button.
     
   
   
   • Connect your device again, SP Flash Tool v3.13 will begin custom recovery installation process, it will take only 1-2 minutes to finished. When it finish it will mark with GREEN CIRCLE in the middle of SP Flash Tool v3.13.
   • Disconnect your device, put back the battery, SIM card, and SD Card. But still don't turn on your device.


3. Installation Vibe UI v1.5 1427
   • Go to recovery mode by pressing and hold Power Button + Volume Up + Volume Down until your device screen show recovery mode.
   • On TWRP main menu, select Install with TWRP you can install 1-10 files at the same time, but now we only need install 2 files. Point the Select File to VIBEUI_v1.5_1427_ST_S820 and Vibe UI Cleaner. then Slide to install. VIBEUI_v1.5_1427_ST_S820 must be install first. This process will take time about 4-5 minutes, wait until process finish successful. 
   • When finish, select Reboot. When there is warning to install SuperSu please select Don't Install and your device will reboot and start to HomeScreen. 
   • Now you already successful install VIBEUI_v1.5_1427_ST_S820, to language setting to change your language to English. If you wanna enable USB Debugging you can dial ####537999# this will open Developer Settings.


4. Installation Gapps and Rooting
   • Go to recovery mode, like on step 3.a press and hold Power Button + Volume Up + Volume Down until your device screen show recovery mode. 
   • On TWRP main menu, select Install and point to Gapps Minimal for 4.4.2, and KingUser v3.3.6, Swipe to install wait until process finish successful
   • Back to TWRP main menu, select Reboot


5. Finish - Now your device is ready. Lenovo S820 with Android 4.4.2 + Gapps + Root and clean from Chinesse Applications.
